30 Minute Portrait Stories

29 – 31 May 2015, The Big Splash, RIverfront Theatre.

Exhibition: 30th June – 13th July 2015, The Project Space, Newport.

What can you do if you only have 30 minutes? This painting project hopefully inspired visitors to the Riverfront at The Big Splash, that it is possible to get creative with limited time and resources. I worked with artist Barry J Morgan (aka Yuri Nalkhak). We dressed up. Wore blonde wigs. We looked silly. It could have been to mask our nerves... live painting and a mission to capture a likeness...in just 30 minutes?

As well as a portrait, we recorded a story that people shared with us and, in the quiet of the studio afterwards, used elements of their stories to add graphic elements to the portraits.

We were commissioned by Newport Live to paint in front of an audience at The Big Splash from 12 - 6pm. It was intense!

It was important to connect with the people we were painting – questions were chosen randomly and people answered as truthfully as they liked. These fragmented conversations became integral to the finished portraits. It was a great experience to see the finished paintings 2 weeks later at The Project Space. We connected again to our sitters and they loved the contrasting styles.
