White Ribbon

The White Ribbon project involved working with vulnerable young children to raise awareness of abusive relationships, offering support and advice to anyone affected by it. In collaboration with artist Stephanie Roberts, in partnership with Ty Hafan, Caerphilly Youth Forum and Women's Aid.

The session began with a visual 'brain-storm' where magazines and newspapers were  cut up 'Dada' style to extract collages or simple messages. We used reclaimed wooden doors onto which hand drawn graphics, collage and messages were applied. The underlying theme was a question, "What goes on, behind closed doors?" Supported by the children's carers, we (the artists) didn't discuss any issues in particular with the children. in fact it was a chance to work in small groups immersing ourselves in creative activity. During the workshop someone said,

"I love coming here. I completely forgot about my problems."

In November, there was an exhibition at University of South Wales, City Campus and a screening of a film made by Caerphilly Youth Forum. In addition to facilitating the workshops with Stephanie, Marion created her own closed door.
